Desert Dev Lab 2026: New Mexico’s Largest Software Hackathon Returns with a Focus on Food & Agriculture

Desert Dev Lab, New Mexico’s largest annual software hackathon, returns on April 18–19, 2026, hosted by NM Tech Talks. This free, open-to-the-public event brings together developers, students, designers, and entrepreneurs for a fast-paced, two-day build focused on real-world challenges.

Last year’s hackathon welcomed 40+ hackers, 15 mentors, and 8 judges, with support from 15+ sponsors—making it accessible to participants across the state. Teams worked intensively to produce functional software prototypes, which they demoed to judges at the end of the weekend. The winning team included participants from CNM, NMSU, and MIT, and one team even launched a startup from their hackathon project, reinforcing NM Tech Talks’ commitment to building technology companies in New Mexico.

A key feature of Desert Dev Lab is mentorship. Expert mentors support teams throughout the weekend, creating an educational and collaborative environment that promotes skill-building and upward economic mobility. Teams also retain full ownership and licensing rights to their work, enabling continued development beyond the event.

The 2026 theme is Food and Agriculture, encouraging participants to explore innovative software and AI-driven solutions in sustainability, food systems, and agriculture. This year’s event will be hosted in partnership with WESST, which will also host the public project demos.

NM Tech Talks is looking to grow participation this year and welcomes hackers of all skill levels. Join us April 18–19, 2026, and be part of New Mexico’s growing tech and AI ecosystem.
