The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has selected research teams from Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, the University of New Mexico, and New Mexico State University to lead projects under its new Genesis Mission, recognizing New Mexico’s leadership in artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, and scientific innovation.

The Genesis Mission is an $800 million DOE initiative that brings together national laboratories, industry, universities, and other partners to create the world’s most powerful integrated science discovery platform. By connecting artificial intelligence, supercomputing, quantum systems, and advanced scientific instruments, the initiative aims to accelerate breakthroughs in energy, national security, and discovery science while transforming how researchers solve some of the world’s most complex scientific challenges.

The selected New Mexico institutions will play significant roles in advancing the mission. Los Alamos National Laboratory will lead seven projects, while Sandia National Laboratories will lead six projects focused on AI frameworks, systems integration, and other artificial intelligence-enabled technologies. The University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University also received awards to develop innovative AI-driven research, including projects focused on advanced signal extraction techniques and quantum physics simulations.

Together, these awards demonstrate the depth and breadth of New Mexico’s research ecosystem and the strength of collaboration among the state’s national laboratories and universities. By combining expertise across institutions, New Mexico continues to play a leading role in advancing artificial intelligence and scientific computing for the nation.

The selection of Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, the University of New Mexico, and New Mexico State University also reflects the collaborative vision of the New Mexico Artificial Intelligence Consortium (NMAIC). As founding members of NMAIC, these institutions are working together to strengthen New Mexico’s AI ecosystem, accelerate research and innovation, expand educational opportunities, and build partnerships that position the state at the forefront of artificial intelligence.

NMAIC congratulates the researchers and teams selected for the Genesis Mission. Their participation in this landmark initiative reinforces New Mexico’s position as a national leader in AI-enabled scientific discovery and demonstrates the power of collaboration between the state’s national laboratories, universities, industry, and government partners to address the scientific and technological challenges of the future.
