New Supercomputers to Boost Nuclear Security, AI, and Science at Los Alamos
Both supercomputers will be built on HPE’s Cray GX5000 architecture and powered by NVIDIA’s next-generation Vera Rubin platform, which is optimized for large-scale AI and simulation. The key goal is not just faster computing, but smarter computing — systems that can run complex simulations while also using AI to improve prediction, speed up analysis, and enable new types of scientific discovery.
Mission will operate in classified space and focus on national security science, using AI alongside simulation to handle large, high-stakes problems more quickly and in parallel. Scheduled to come online in 2027, it will replace the Crossroads system and represents NNSA’s first major “post-exascale” platform built for integrated AI-driven modeling.
Vision, also expected in 2027, will support unclassified research and bring similar AI power to open science work at Los Alamos — including materials, nuclear science, energy modeling, and biomedical research. Both systems will allow many users and workloads to run at the same time, helping researchers apply AI and simulation together across a wider range of projects, faster than before.
