As a founding member of the New Mexico Artificial Intelligence Consortium (NMAIC), New Mexico State University (NMSU) continues to demonstrate leadership in artificial intelligence and advanced computing research. NMSU physics professor Raza Sufian has been selected to lead a research team as part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission, an $800 million national initiative designed to accelerate scientific discovery by integrating artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and high-performance computing.
Sufian’s project, “AI-Accelerated Non-Abelian Gauge Dynamics on Quantum Hardware,” is among the projects funded during the first phase of the Genesis Mission. Working with collaborators at Brookhaven National Laboratory and the University of Maryland, the team will use AI to help design, optimize, and improve quantum computations, reducing calculation errors and making today’s quantum hardware more effective for scientific research.
The research will explore fundamental questions about the forces that govern the universe while advancing methods that could help enable the next generation of fault-tolerant quantum computers. The project also strengthens collaborations among universities, national laboratories, and industry while providing new opportunities to train students and researchers in the rapidly growing fields of AI, quantum computing, and high-performance computing.
This recognition underscores NMSU’s commitment to advancing AI-driven research and highlights the important role New Mexico institutions play in shaping the future of scientific innovation.
